I Met a Man

I met a man one day,
sitting under a tree.
I spoke to him;
“Father, ” I said, “teach me how to care.”
He said to me,
“Look at the world, my son.
Examine it in all its grandeur.
See the dew glisten on a blade of grass
Marvel at the colours of the rainbow
Look for variety in the darkest night
See the beauty in each creation,
each plant, each creature.
Open your eyes to what the world has to show you
and then you will know how to care.”

I met a man one day,
sitting under a tree.
I spoke to him;
“Father, ” I said, “ teach me how to care.”
He said to me,
“Listen to the world, my son.
Learn to distinguish the sounds.
Hear the birds sing in the busiest city
Catch the sounds of the animals,
the plants, speaking to each other
Listen to a tree grow
Hear the wind on the calmest of days
Open your ears to what the world has to show you
and then you will know how to care.”

I met a man one day,
sitting under a tree.
I spoke to him;
“Father,” I said, “teach me how to care.”
He said to me,
“Touch the world, my son.
Feel all the different textures.
Soar with the eagle
Swim with the whale
Float on the wings of a butterfly
Walk barefoot in the sands of time,
in the trees, in the mountains.
Open your hands to what the world has to show you and
then you will know how to care.”
